9.18.10, THE BANKER: TO MBA/NOT MBA that is the Question?

Ok...so here's another post.  I have had writers block so I hadn't been posting much.  It looks like the block is slowly lifting.  As we are on this journey called life, Vision is soo important.  It takes deep introspection to make sure we are doing & living out those ideas we see in our head as the path is underway.  Lately, I have really been thinking if I am doing the right thing here....I know, you say, "why are you asking this question now so far along in the process??!!"  It's not that I haven't asked the question many times before I began the process.  It's just lately, in my role at work, I sit and think about all that I do, have done..etc..and I am wondering if I truly will benefit that much more from having an MBA.

Honestly, I am not bragging by anymeans.  But, I have a pretty good education under my belt from Tennessee State & Vanderbilt.  I  have served United States Air Force Det: 790.  When I began my banking career, I did banking School through the Tennessee Bankers Association @ Owen GSM (Vandy).  I am licensed in my field in Real Estate & Mortgage.  Finally, I work for the 2nd Largest Bank in this country in Charlotte, NC. The opportunity to advance is amazing.  Now, I am back here again....do I really need an MBA???  Shoot!...I had worked through all of this stuff previously. And, validated every reason I should  get one.  But, I think about my one of my friends who just graduated from   HBS  & went into IBanking.  He's just beginning his career.  He switched from engineering.  So, there I can see the correlation of how an MBA has benefited him.

I, on the other hand, have been in the financial services industry for over 4 yrs now.  My career has progressed at a steady pace.   I may have considered changing industries (i.e. consulting) but after considering the intense travel schedule & having a family, I decided against it.  Plus, I like initiating & closing deals....making things happen!  Thats what I love about what I do....I provide a very valuable service to people & I am really good at what I do.  I don't desire to transition industries, just business lines....and I wonder how effective going back to school will be in making that transition happen?  I am a network queen...I gurantee you I can work my way into the Bunit.  It's just a matter of connecting with the power players there.  With that being said, I believe getting an MBA is valuable.  I just need to figure out if it is really worth the time compared to the experiences I already have that place me where I am.  I have been slowly considering looking into executive level MBA's. Particularly, Duke has a Wknd MBA Option & Wake Forest has one in the city......It pains me to say this now...but, I really don't know anymore.  I sure picked a fine time to be here.........ohhhhh, the nights and dayz ahead will be interesting to answer......DOES THE BANKER DO IT:  TO MBA/NOT MBA that is the Question?!!!

As always, Be Luv,
Rashida
